TDEE, or total daily energy expenditure.
just what is this and why is it such an important factor when it comes to loosing weight?
Have you ever wondered how somebody you know can eat what seems to be an overly excessive amount of food each day whilst doing next to no exercise and doesn’t gain any weight? However you feel you always have to be carefully watching what your eating aswell as making sure your exercising numerous times each week?
Well this all ties into the focus of this article TDEE.
So just what is TDEE then?
TDEE is essentially the amount of energy (calories) needed by the body each day to maintain its current weight.
There are various factors at play here which means everyone in the world has a different TDEE. These factors include; height, weight, age, gender, daily activity level and genetics.
With that in mind here is a quick example of two completely different types of people with completely different TDEE levels.
- Person 1: She is an Olympic 100 meter runner who intensely exercises 5 days a week making sure she is continually in shape for her profession.
- Person 2: She is a 9-5 office worker who works really hard at her job, but after a long stressful day at work doesn’t really have time to be going to the gym on a regular basis.
Based on the two examples who do you believe burns of the higher amount of calories on a daily basis and therefore has a higher TDEE ?
Answer: Person 1 is likely to be burning off much more energy (calories) each day and therefore will have a much higher TDEE as she will need to be in taking much more energy per day to maintain her current body weight. Person 2 will not be burning as many calories as she is not as physically active within her job role therefore the body is not being forced into burning though as much energy as person 1.
How do we find our own TDEE ?
So just how exactly do we figure out our own TDEE so we know how many calories our body needs to maintain its weight each day?
Easy, all we have to do is go to this TDEE Calculator and simply type in all the required information the calculator needs to work out what your TDEE is (height, weight, age, gender and daily activity level)
Once the information has been imported into the calculator just click the Calculate button, and you will receive your results.

Things to remember:
- Be sure to input accurate information in to the calculator (this is the information the calculator will use to give your TDEE)
- In some instances the TDEE calculator although very close may not be 100% accurate as it is just a calculator and everyone is different (bare in mind the calculator at most will only be a couple of hundred calories out)
- If your activity level changes from day to day it might be worth calculating a few different TDEE results using different activity levels each time (as your body will burn off more energy/calories on the days your activity level is higher.
